1798/1820 New Classicistic Appointments

The new Duke, Friedrich II, has his summer residence in Ludwigsburg modernized beginning in 1798. His architect, Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret, initially alters the Beletage in the Old Corps de logis and the Giants' Building. Protestant church services are held again in the Palace Chapel, which is remodeled as a result. The private gardens of the Duke and Duchess are laid out on both sides of the New Corps de logis.

Of course, the raising of Friedrich to Elector in 1803 is to be recognizable in the most important representation rooms. Thouret unifies the Baroque representation rooms and the residential rooms in the New Corps de logis and decorates them using various examples in the Classicistic style in a somewhat hurried manner.

Library of the King in the New Corps de Logis

After being raised to King in 1806, Friedrich I initially has the buildings in Stuttgart modernized. In Ludwigsburg the new Library (Bibliothek), which Klinckerfuß produces according to a concept of Thouret, is not built until 1809.

After being raised to the rank of King, Friedrich I has the Württemberg family order, the Hubertus Hunting Order (Hubertus-Jagdorden), renamed to the Order of the Golden Eagle (Goldener Adlerorden). The Protestant chapel in the western central building is converted to an Order Chapel (Ordenskapelle) beginning in 1810. Like the adjacent Order Hall (Ordenssaal), it is remodeled by Thouret in the Empire style, and the older Baroque appointments are partially retained.

In 1812 Thouret alters the King's and proscenium box in the Theater and has the room redecorated. The Rococo ornamentation is replaced with Classicistic decorations. In 1815/16 he redesigns the ceiling paintings in the Guard Hall (Gardesaal) and the staircases of the New Corps de logis. The Marble Hall (Marmorsaal) is provided with an illusionary ceiling with a cloudy sky.

During the redecoration of the chambers of Dowager Queen Charlotte Mathilde, Thouret's decorations from 1817/20 are more uniform than in the previously completed rooms of the King.
