View to the skies
In 1815, King Fredrick I commissioned royal court master builder Nikolaus Friedrich to rebuild the Baroque ballroom in the centre of the New Main Building and make it contemporary. He replaced the existing ceiling vaults with just a slightly vaulted ceiling. The new fresco depicted a cloudy blue sky giving the illusion of opening the room up to the skies. The majestic chandeliers look as if they are being carried by a flying eagle and wild ducks.
